Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence https://www.pbslambdasigma.org/celebrating-100-years-of-excellence/ Sat, 20 Apr 2024 11:27:13 +0000 https://www.pbslambdasigma.org/?p=6426

On Saturday, April 20, 2024, a momentous celebration unfolded as the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Lambda Sigma Chapter, marked a century of unwavering service and camaraderie in metro Atlanta. This grand affair, held at the elegant Savanna Hall within the captivating grounds of Zoo Atlanta, was not just a celebration but a testament to our enduring spirit and a source of immense pride for all who have contributed to our legacy.

The centennial anniversary was a vibrant testament to the enduring spirit of Phi Beta Sigma, drawing members from far and wide to honor a legacy steeped in excellence. Amidst the jubilant atmosphere, old bonds were rekindled, and new connections forged, underscoring the profound impact of fraternity life. The backdrop of the zoo added a unique charm, infusing the occasion with a sense of adventure and joy and reinforcing our shared sense of belonging and value.

Lambda Sigma Chapter, founded in 1924 by Morris Brown College’s Zeta Chapter graduates, has been a beacon of leadership and service. Over the years, it has attracted renowned Atlanta educators, business leaders, and social activists, including luminaries like Brother Dr. C. V. Troup, Brother Herman J. Russell, Brother Hosea Williams, and Brother Congressman John Lewis, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the fabric of the community.

The centennial celebration program paid homage to Phi Beta Sigma’s International program initiatives by presenting awards to organizations making a significant difference in education, business, and social action. The Andrew and Walter Young YMCA was recognized for its impactful youth development programs; Mr. Joe Freeman was honored for his philanthropic contributions; the H. J. Russell Company was celebrated for their commitment to diversity and inclusion in business; and the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation acknowledged for their social justice advocacy, were all honored for their outstanding contributions.

The road to this remarkable milestone was paved with meticulous planning and community engagement, reflecting the Lambda Sigma Chapter’s commitment to a legacy of service and excellence. The event was a testament to the dedication of President Robert Eason, Centennial Chair William Scott, Co-chairs Lewis Kent, and Ucal Palmer, and the entire Centennial Celebration Committee, whose efforts ensured a memorable and impactful celebration.

As the chapter embarks on its next century, it does so with a renewed commitment to “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.” The centennial celebration was a reflection on the past and a beacon guiding the fraternity toward a future filled with continued service, leadership, and brotherhood.

The brothers made a striking impression as they gathered to mark this historic occasion. They were dressed in their finest attire and exuded elegance and style, showcasing traditional and contemporary fashion. From royal blue and black smoking jackets to white tuxedo jackets paired with royal blue bow ties, each brother added their unique flair, embodying the essence of Phi Beta Sigma, inc.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including City Council members from several metro Atlanta cities, Fulton County Judge, and notable figures like Fani Willis, District Attorney for Fulton County. The evening was further elevated by musical entertainment from Anonymous Da Band and engaging hosting by award-winning news anchors and reporters from 11Alive, Faith Jessie, and Jonathan Martin.  Lastly, there were heartfelt tributes to Brother John Lewis and other luminaries who have shaped the fraternity’s legacy.

Congratulations to the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma, Lambda Sigma Chapter, on this historic milestone. Here’s to another century of excellence, service, and brotherhood!

Ucal Palmer – 2023 Real Men Wear Pink Honoree https://www.pbslambdasigma.org/ucal-palmer-2023-real-men-wear-pink-honoree/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 01:45:52 +0000 https://www.pbslambdasigma.org/?p=6294

In 2020, female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Despite this, the death rate from breast cancer dropped by 41% from 1989 to 2018 as a result of earlier detection through increased awareness and mammography screening, as well as advances in treatments. And today we celebrate the more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. including those who completed treatment and those still undergoing treatment.

Also, Men can get breast cancer. This affects everyone and I am sure that everyone in this group can share a story

Let’s join the fight. My ask is very simple

1. Wear something pink during the month of October to bring awareness

2. Please consider donating a min of 25.00 to my ACS, menwearpink Campaign

3. Share my link and flyer with 10 new people

The funds donated help support the American Cancer Society programs and services
